The SecuCoast project studies the interaction of groundwater and seawater to help secure coastal groundwater resources and improve the environmental state of marine ecosystems.

The discharge of groundwater from coastal aquifers into the coastal ocean is a widespread phenomenon occurring along coastlines worldwide. Submarine springs are among the most visible manifestations of this process, where large volumes of water emerge into the ocean in a localized manner. These springs are often identified as cold, freshwater spots in the sea, small depressions on the seafloor sometimes associated with white microbial mats, or openings in sea ice. We invite everyone to help us identify and document these fascinating occurrences.

Participation is easy! Make a note of the phenomenon you observed, the date and location coordinates and send them to us using the form below. We may later ask you to send us pictures of the location.
